Insulation testing confirms that the insulation separating live parts from accessible parts will not break down in normal use and will still hold under the overvoltages and transients that occur on a mains supply. It has two complementary parts: a dielectric strength test, which applies a high voltage for a defined time to prove the insulation holds, and an insulation resistance measurement, which quantifies how well it resists leakage.
Dielectric strength testing applies AC or DC voltage between live parts and accessible metal, between primary and secondary circuits, and across critical spacings, for one minute or for a shorter time at a higher voltage as permitted by the standard. Insulation resistance is measured with a direct voltage, typically 500 V, and must normally exceed 2 Mohm, or 7 Mohm at operating temperature for appliances.
NTEK performs both tests as type tests and as routine production tests, on appliances, IT and audio-visual equipment, lighting, power supplies and electric tools.
