RoHS is the abbreviation of The Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The RoHS Directive bans electrical and electronic products containing lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) above the specified limits from entering the EU market from 1 July 2006.
On 4 June 2015 the EU published Directive (EU) 2015/863 in its Official Journal, amending Annex II of RoHS 2.0 to add four phthalates. The number of restricted substances in Annex II of RoHS 2.0 has therefore increased to ten.
Beyond the EU, other countries and regions such as China, California (USA), Singapore, India, the UAE and Turkey have also introduced RoHS control requirements, making RoHS the most basic entry threshold for electrical and electronic products in the global market.
