Formaldehyde is a colourless gas with a pungent smell that is released slowly from urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins, which are widely used as adhesives in wood-based panels, and from some textile finishing agents. Because it is a recognised irritant and a classified carcinogen, most markets set emission limits for the products that contain it.
The main methods are the 1 m3 chamber method of EN 717-1 and ISO 16000-9, the desiccator method of EN 717-3 and JIS A 1460, the gas analysis method of EN 717-2, and the perforator method of EN 120 for board content. Textiles are tested to GB/T 2912.1 and ISO 14184-1.
NTEK provides formaldehyde emission and content testing for panels, flooring, furniture, textiles, adhesives and automotive interior materials, and issues reports for CE marking, GB 18580 compliance and buyer specification.
