Temperature rise testing measures how hot each part of a product becomes in use. The purpose is to confirm that no part exceeds the temperature its material can withstand, that insulation does not age prematurely, and that accessible surfaces stay below the values that would burn or startle a user.
The product is operated at rated voltage, at 1.06 times rated voltage and under the abnormal conditions defined in the standard, until thermal equilibrium is reached. Thermocouples are attached to windings, transformer cores, switch contacts, terminals, capacitors, printed circuit board tracks and accessible surfaces, and the temperature rise above ambient is recorded. The results are compared with the limits in IEC 62368-1, IEC 60335-1, IEC 60598-1 or IEC 60065, which depend on the material class of the insulation and on whether the surface is likely to be touched.
NTEK performs temperature rise testing together with the related power measurement and dielectric tests, and advises on the design changes needed when a limit is exceeded.
