Odour testing assesses how a material smells under conditions similar to those inside a parked vehicle. A trained panel heats the sample in a closed container, then opens it and rates the odour intensity on a defined scale and describes the odour type. Because smell is subjective, the method fixes the sample size, the container, the temperature, the humidity and the waiting time, and requires several assessors.
VDA 270 is the standard method for automotive interior materials and uses a six-point scale from 1, not perceptible, to 6, unbearable. Variants at 23, 40 and 80 degrees Celsius are used depending on the part, since some materials only release odour when the cabin is hot. Results are reported as the panel average together with the odour description.
NTEK carries out VDA 270 odour evaluation together with VDA 277 total carbon and VDA 278 VOC and FOG testing, which together describe the emission, condensate and odour behaviour of an interior material.
