The End-of-Life Vehicles Directive 2000/53/EC restricts the use of lead, mercury, cadmium and hexavalent chromium in materials and components fitted to vehicles placed on the EU market, with a set of annex exemptions for applications where no substitute is yet available. Its purpose is to make vehicles easier to recycle and to reduce the hazardous waste produced when they are dismantled.
ELV compliance requires more than a single test: each material has to be identified, its hazardous substance content measured against the thresholds, and the exemptions applied correctly where they exist. Documentation has to follow the part through the supply chain.
NTEK provides ELV testing and material declaration services for automotive parts, covering X-ray fluorescence screening of homogeneous materials followed by confirmatory analysis where a threshold is exceeded.
